Robert Lewandowski has thrown his support behind the idea to move the World Cup playoff match between his native Poland and Russia to a neutral venue.
Russia achieved more points than Poland in the qualifying phase, meaning that they earned the right to play the one-off tie at home, but the Bayern Munich striker wants the match moved to a neutral country amid the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

13:20 GMT: Ukraine ‘disappeared’ after Warsaw proposal
After Russia offered talks with Ukraine to take place in Minsk, Belarus, on Friday, Kiev responded asking for a meeting to instead be held in Warsaw, Poland. However, word on that meeting in Warsaw subsided as Ukraine ‘disappeared’ according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“I, once again, call on the president of Russia. There is a war going on all over Ukraine, let us sit at the negotiating table to stop the deaths,” Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message on social media.
12:35 GMT: Russian bans Poland, Czech and Bulgaria airlines
In response to a similar measure imposed by Eastern European nations against Russia, Moscow has taken the decision to shut down its airspace for passenger airlines owned by companies in Poland, Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
The UK banned flights by Russian airliner Aeroflot over its territory on Friday, as well as Russian private jets, with Russia responding by barring UK airlines from its airspace.

The United States have offered Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky refuge in their country amid the chaos currently taking place in Kyiv as well as various locations from where he could represent his government outside of his nation’s borders but has declined, according to the Washington Post.

Fighting has broken out in the streets of Kyiv, as the conflict in Ukraine rolls on. So far, it is not clear whether the fighers on the Russian side are actually Russian troops, or soliders from the recently-declared rebel republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The Kremlin has lost more than 3,500 soldiers in just two days, the Ukrainian Armed Forces claimed on February 26. Nearly 200 service members have been held hostage. Russia has lost 14 planes, eight helicopters, 102 tanks, 536 BBMs, 15 heavy machine guns and one BUK missile since February 24, according to Ukraine’s military

The European Union has imposed strict sanctions on Russia, including president Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“We are now listing President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov as well,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said as she joined her EU counterparts to agree on the new sanctions.
“They are responsible for the deaths of innocent people in Ukraine, and for trampling on the international system. We, as Europeans, do not accept that.”
